  • Installing NCARG (NCAR Graphics) on a Mac OS X (10.5) using MacPorts

The easiest way is following the macports commands as given in ncarg.darwinports.com/
and summarized here (with a few additional information):

1) STEP 1: preliminary step
If not done before, download and install XCODE version 3.1.4 or higher from the Mac Dev Center webpage

2) STEP 2: installation of ncarg
>> sudo mkdir /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports/ncarg
>> cd /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports/ncarg
>> sudo port install ncarg
when the commands above are executed, you will be waiting for a while during the installation. In fact, the installation process will first install all the dependencies
(e.g. netcdf-4.1.1, mesa, and many more). Only as last you will be seeing the installation of ncarg

3) STEP 3: set the correct environment for your machine to find the ncarg (the box below shows where darwinports installed ncarg on my MacBook. Verify the correct path for your own installation and adapt the instructions below to your own needs):

If using bash:
>> pico ~/.profile (or ~/.bashrc depending on your system)
add the following two export commands inside your .profile (.bashrc) file:
export NCARG_ROOT=/opt/local/var/macports/software/ncarg/5.2.1_0+gcc44/opt/local
close .profile, and do >> source ~/.profile to activate the new environment.
